Listen, Live, and Learn (LLL) 2024 pre-elections business breakfast with Mr. Moeletsi Mbeki

16 Jun 2023 · LLL team

Since the first democratic elections of 1994, South Africa has found itself at a number of pivotal moments in which it has pondered the well-being of its hard-won democracy. As we move closer to the 2024 National Elections, there is a growing consensus that these elections will be a decisive moment in the country's history for a number of reasons:

The disconcerting revelations by the Zondo Commission still haunt the nation. Eskom's electrical grid is tottering on the brink of collapse, with a real risk of the country being plunged into darkness. A continuous increase in the unemployment rate in the face of constrained economic activity. The increasing prospect of a coalition government/s without a clear vision. A notable increase in violent crimes and organised crime. Contentious foreign policy positions as evidenced by the Ukraine-Russia war.

In this climate and with no master plan in sight, socioeconomic questions abound. Inevitably, more and more societal actors and stakeholders are increasingly wondering whether the much anticipated 2024 National and Provincial Elections will result in any meaningful change beyond the prospect of a coalition government. Perhaps even more unsettling – if coalition governments at local government level are anything to go by – whether the urgent need for service delivery and stable governance will be realised.

Stellenbosch University, through its School of Public Leadership and the Listen, Live and Learn programme, will be hosting a Pre-Elections Business Breakfast as part of a series of impactful conversations. The key note address for the inaugural conversation will be delivered by South African political analyst and Chairperson of the South African Institute of International Affairs, Mr Moeletsi Mbeki. Through these discussions, we hope to engage with various stakeholders to unpack and co-create the South Africa we all aspire to live in.
